Northwood Peacock and Urn

Northwood Peacock and Urn
Description : One of the patterns that Northwood Glass was known for was their “Peacock and Urn” bowls. Many manufacturers made similar patterns but Northwood was king of the pattern.
The bowl was typically made with a large master bowl and up to 6 smaller bowls. They were all round and turned up toward the edge. These sets were known a Ice Cream sets. Not that they were necessarily made for ice cream but that is what they are called. Its an identification of shape rather than function.

These bowls were made in all colors of carnival glass that Northwood offered. In addition, they made this piece in what is known a Custard Glass. This type of glass was named due to the color. It typically ranged from a off white color to a translucent yellow type color.
The glass got its color from “Uranium Salts” and will glow under a black light. The amount of uranium salts determined the color of the glass.

Northwood’s custard is on the off white color side and will often have an additional treatment of colored stain added to the pattern. The most common colored stain is what is called “Nutmeg” followed by a pinkish stain, a blue stain, and in very rare examples green is also known.
Some pieces of Northwood custard was even iridized and is considered in the carnival glass category. Usually the iridized pieces came in 2 treatments. A clear iridescence and was called “Pearlized” and the other is marigold over custard.

The piece that I’m mentioning here is a bowl in the custard with nutmeg stain. The unusual thing about this bowl is that during the process the maker managed to get his fingerprint in the nutmeg stain! Please take a look at the picture of it in my photo album.
It amazing to have a piece of glass from 100+ years ago with such a personal touch!
