Contemporary CUT-TO-VASELINE Glass, Made in Czech Republic 2005
Contemporary BLUE-CUT-TO-VASELINE vase, Made in Czech Republic 2005
Description
:
I know two entrepreneurs who also collect glass. One is in the USA, one in Belgium. They got together and did the legwork to make this happen. They were able to find 5 different glass artisans who each could do part of the process to make some new "two-color" cut glass, in the style of Val St. Lambert. While this piece has a more classical look, they also made some pieces that are more modern looking. Shapes made include this vase, a tall cylinder vase, tall wine goblets (like 15" tall!), decanters, large bowls, and a few other shapes. I suspect less than 100 pieces were made in total. Their first unveiling of this was at the Vaseline Glass Convention in Pittsburgh, PA in Oct. 2005. Literally, it was the first evening of the convention that the glass cleared through customs. I bought the very first piece they had available (about 25-30 pieces at the show), so this is the cream of the crop as far as color, density of the blue, etc. The glass workers also made about 1/2 of what was offered with a red overlay. These were all sample pieces to show what they could do, and none of the pieces were marked. No name was ever put to the manufacturer, as it was a variety of people that worked on the project, from several locations in the Czech Republic. They found a glass house that agreed to do the blanks, but it could only be done on the single day before a holiday break, as they had to drain the tank to put vaseline glass in it. Height: 8 inches, top diameter 5 1/4 inches. thickness of glass at top rim: 1/2 inch.
The plateau it sits on is vintage victorian.
