Decorated Cranberry & Vaseline Opalescent vase, w/ original brass base; Most likely Bohemian.
Description : The maker of this vase is unknown, but it is most likely Bohemian, based on all of it's attributes. It was made with a small cranberry gather, followed by a larger gather of vaseline glass capable of being struck to opalescent. The base has a knop just above the original brass holder. It is held in place with plaster of paris that does not seem to have been disturbed. In ordinary room light, the only part that appears to have any vaseline coloration at all is the bulbous knop at the base of the piece. (That was how I spotted it in the antique store in Oklahoma City). This was purchased from a small shop in the old farmer's market annex in OKC, OK. The lady was retired and just came in on the weekends and opened her shop when she felt like it. EVERYTHING had at least 6 months worth of dust on it. I don't think she cared whether she sold anything or not. I bought this piece about 2000. When she went to the little closet to get some wrapping materials, she had a stack of newspapers and she pulled a few off of the top. When I got home, I looked at the date on the newspapers and they were dated 1982. I still consider this piece one of the more unusual in my collection and am proud enough of it, that it was presented on the back cover of my book when it was printed.

Depending on the lighting conditions, this piece has 'moods' and it is one of the reasons vaseline glass is so appealing. The composite picture below shows 4 different lighting scenarios and it looks different in all of them.
